A name change: Franz Weidinger and a brother left Europe in 1754, landing in Philadelphia in October. As an immigrant, Franz was required to swear allegiance to King George III, the ruler of the English colonies. At that time, Whitinger became the Anglicized spelling and pronunciation of the family name. It is not known whether this change came at Franz's request or was the work of a presumptuous immigration clerk. After that day, Franz Weidinger became Francis Whitinger.
